Het Elisabeth Gasthuis was na de grote stadsbrand van 1576 gevestigd op een voormalig kloosterterrein aan het Groot Heiligland. Bouwen van huurhuizen was in de 17de eeuw een gebruikelijke vorm van geldbeleggen voor een gasthuis.
